Families in Action

Are you part of a school community with a goal of
developing stronger collaboration with families?

Families in Action - A Family Engagement Series
Perhaps there hasn’t been time to create the material that you want to deliver, or the handouts you’d like families to have. Perhaps you are a new school leader and not as familiar with what topics are the most important. Whatever the obstacles, this publication will support you in removing them, bringing you closer to reaching your goal.

Designed by a team of Montessori educators, this carefully curated family engagement calendar offers you the resources to reach and inspire your community.

Families in Action holds slide decks, agendas, and handouts for eleven family engagement events and three staff meetings. These tools and resources support everyone in fully collaborating around the education of the children in your community. They are all customizable; meant to be tailored to match the levels and conventions of your school.

The Power of Our Words: Using Language of Reverence
$29.00

This session explores the power of our words and their effects on human flourishing. By examining and changing our word choice to and about children, each other, and ourselves, we can change our sense of the school community and the children’s sense of self and agency in the world. The Language of Reverence model emphasizes creating a powerful, shared language that allows all members of the community—children, families, and school-based adults—to feel respected and valued.  Positive Phrasing invites families to speak to and with children in a positive manner, imagining the best in them and building their potential.

Freedom, Limits, and Responsibility at Home
$29.00

Freedom within limits for younger children, or Freedom and Responsibility for older children, are cornerstones of the Montessori method. Our school supports children learning at their own pace with the freedom to choose their own activities. This freedom comes with both limits and responsibility. This session will review these topics and leave you with suggestions for how to carry this back to your home.

Transition night - for families of children moving to Lower Elementary, Upper Elementary & Middle School
$29.00

This session focuses on families of children who are about to make a transition from one classroom to the next. It outlines an evening that introduces families to the new level and offers them insight into what’s coming next for their child.

Meet the Teacher/Back to School Night
$120.00

Includes our enrollment video!

Welcome Back to School! Our Open House event is for the whole school. We will share a Welcome Video as you arrive. The video offers an introduction to the ways a Montessori school is different from a traditional school. The handout for this event is a glossary of Montessori terms that you may hear used at school or at other Family Engagement events. From there, you will have an opportunity to visit your children’s classroom.

Supporting Reading at Home
$29.00

Literacy skills develop over years and families can have an enormous impact on how seamlessly those skills are developed. In this session we offer explicit instruction on how to support your children so we can engage in a true partnership between school and home. This slide deck includes two embedded videos demonstrating how to read with your Primary child and how to read with your Elementary child.

Supporting Math at Home
$29.00

Numeracy skills develop over years and families can have an enormous impact on how seamlessly those skills are developed. In this session we offer explicit instruction on how to support your children so we can engage in a true partnership between school and home.

New Student Onboarding Event
$120.00

Includes our Enrollment VIdeo!

Orientation is a fundamental human need. This event demonstrates how to welcome new students and their families to the unique Montessori program and orients them to the school, staff and classroom environment.

Montessori Four Planes of Development
$29.00

Dr. Montessori established a view of child development that looks at their growth in six year increments. She called these ‘planes’ of development. Each plane of development has particular characteristics, sensitive periods and independence goals. This event is designed to offer an overview of the planes of development, with a particular focus on the plane(s) in our school. (You can tailor this presentation to emphasize your school’s population and the way you serve their developmental needs.) The handout is a document that shows the four planes of development in a table, so everyone is able to see how each plane relates to the others. This is particularly helpful if you have children of various ages, who may be in different planes of development.

Introduction to the Elementary & Adolescent Programs
$29.00

This presentation invites families to learn about the Montessori program beyond primary. Your guides can alter the deck to reflect their classrooms and students to entice families that may otherwise make a different choice for the elementary or middle school years.

Bring your Family to School Night
$29.00

This session provides you with the tools you need to create a well-organized opportunity for families to visit children in the classroom that isn’t overwhelming for children or their families.

Summer with your Montessori Child
$29.00

As summer approaches, families are given ideas for how to keep their Montessori child learning throughout the summer. Families will leave this session with tools and resources to support continuous learning all summer long.

Sessions For School-based Adults

Family Conferences (for staff)
$29.00

Designed to share with staff prior to meeting with families, this session helps to calibrate family conferences across the whole school. This way families with multiple children in different classrooms have a similar experience. The PD session for teachers includes a format to follow to ensure everyone gets to all the important information they need to convey to family members in this short amount of time. It also provides a shared notes tool, which you can tailor to your school, for classroom adults to take note of important topics raised during the conference. These notes documents not only support school leaders in tracking which families have had conferences, they also provide important information about which families may need a follow up conversation after the conferences are over.

Gift of the Fourth Year (for staff)
$29.00

This session is also for staff rather than families. Not every child is ready to move into elementary at the same time. Some may be ready sooner and others may need more time. Having these conversations with families early, helps them to understand why the school is making that recommendation and why it will be important for their child’s growth and development.

Seamless Transitions (for staff)
$29.00

Creating balanced learning communities takes thoughtful planning and calibration across the whole school. In this staff professional development session, everyone comes together to understand how children transition from one learning environment to the next with as much transparency and as little anxiety as possible.

I’m a lead teacher or a parent. Can I use these?

Yes! It’s a great way to reach even small groups of families one topic at a time.
